How it works
When to use it
- Split a tax-inclusive price into net amount and tax.
- Add sales tax or VAT to a net price.
Formula
Net = gross ÷ (1 + rate)Tax = net × rate = gross − netGross = net × (1 + rate)Worked example
Given: Gross price 120 at 20% VAT
- Net = 120 ÷ 1.20 = 100.
- VAT = 100 × 20% = 20.
Result: 120 = 100 net + 20 VAT. Taking 20% of 120 (= 24) is a common mistake.
Reading the result
- To remove tax from a gross price, divide by (1 + rate); don't subtract rate × gross.
Limitations
- US sales tax is set by state, county and city and can stack. Check your local combined rate.
- Some goods are reduced-rate or exempt; rules change, so confirm with your tax authority.
How to use
- 1Choose whether the amount includes tax.
- 2Enter the amount and the tax rate.
- 3Read the net amount, tax and gross total.
