How it works

Formula

New root = old root + semitones (slash bass moves too)
Capo fret = (target key − shape key) mod 12

Worked example

Given: C – G – Am – F up 2 semitones; sound in E using C shapes

  1. C→D, G→A, Am→Bm, F→G.
  2. E − C = 4 semitones: capo on fret 4.

Result: D – A – Bm – G; capo 4 with C shapes sounds in E.

Limitations

  • Only common chord spellings are recognized; chords mixed into lyric lines need square brackets.

How to use

  1. 1Paste your chart with chords on their own line above the lyrics, or inline like [Am].
  2. 2Shift with + / − or pick the target key.
  3. 3Copy the result. For a capo, choose the key you want and the shapes you'd like to play.

FAQ

How do I work out the capo fret?

Each fret raises the pitch a semitone, so capo fret = target key − shape key. To sound in E using C shapes, C to E is 4 semitones: capo on fret 4.

Why sharps in some keys and flats in others?

Auto mode follows the target key's convention: F, Bb, Eb, Ab and Db use flats; G, D, A, E and B use sharps. You can force either.

Will my lyrics change?

No. Only lines made entirely of chords, and chords inside square brackets, are transposed.
