How it works
When to use it
- Make a working solution of a given concentration and volume from a stock.
- Find how much stock and diluent you need.
Formula
C₁ × V₁ = C₂ × V₂Enter any three values to solve for the fourth.
Diluent = V₂ − V₁Worked example
Given: Make 100 mL of 1 M from a 10 M stock
- V₁ = 1 × 100 ÷ 10 = 10 mL.
- Add diluent to a final volume of 100 mL (≈ 90 mL).
Result: Take 10 mL of stock and bring to 100 mL.
Reading the result
- Use the same units for C₁ and C₂, and for V₁ and V₂.
- Dilution factor = C₁ ÷ C₂ (10× here).
Limitations
- Assumes volumes are additive. Some mixtures (e.g. ethanol–water, concentrated acids) contract or heat up — always bring to final volume.
- Always add acid to water.
How to use
- 1Choose which value to solve for.
- 2Enter the other three (use consistent units).
- 3Read the result and the diluent volume.
FAQ
What units should I use?
Any, as long as C1 and C2 share units and V1 and V2 share units.
How much diluent do I add?
Diluent volume = V2 − V1.
