How it works

Formula

CSS = (400 − 200) ÷ (T₄₀₀ − T₂₀₀)

Meters (or yards) per second.

CSS pace per 100 = (T₄₀₀ − T₂₀₀) ÷ 2

Worked example

Given: 400 m in 7:20 (440 s), 200 m in 3:25 (205 s)

  1. Difference = 235 s.
  2. CSS pace = 117.5 s (1:57.5 per 100 m).
  3. CSS = 200 ÷ 235 ≈ 0.851 m/s.

Result: Threshold 100s at about 1:57–1:59.
