How it works

Formula

Lane 1 = 400 m (measured 0.30 m from the kerb)
Lane n = 400 + 2π × [(n − 1) × 1.22 + 0.20 − 0.30] m

Lanes are 1.22 m wide; lanes 2+ are measured 0.20 m from the inner line.

Worked example

Given: 3000 m in lane 2

  1. Lane 2 = 400 + 2π × 1.12 ≈ 407.04 m.
  2. 3000 ÷ 407.04 ≈ 7.37 laps.

Result: Just over 7 laps; running 7.5 laps would add about 53 m.
